25/07/09: Chevening (285-2) lost to Speldhurst (288-0) by 10 wickets
In a crazy game of cricket, Chevening's apparently massive total of 285-2 was overhauled with panache by the Speldhurst openers. Chevening were asked to bat and Andy Black quickly set about attacking the opposition bowling, with support from Simon Baldwin. When Baldwin was out for 36 the partnership was already worth 172. Andy Black ended up with a magnificent 156, and David Franklin scored eight sixes at the end in a knock of 66* from 25 balls. Chevening were understandably confident of victory at tea-time, but a monstrous knock from Renton, who scored 193*, and support from Danby (85*) saw Speldhurst cruise to an incredible win.
It's even crazier when you compare it to the corresponding fixture last year, when we scraped home with 83-9 against their 79 all out. Last year's figures were 162-19, this year's were 573-2, which is a record for most runs in a match.

Jason Draper scored an aggressive 42 to set up Chevening's run-chase, and a superbly disciplined 57* from Pat Sutton-Mattocks took Chevening right to the edge of a deserved victory. Chevening were disappointed to lose their game against Cudham Wyse after an excellent start with the ball reduced the home side to 74-6. A seventh-wicket partnership of 73 followed, though, and Cudham's score of 158-8 was certainly respectable on a horrible day on which the rain never stopped falling. In reply Chevening were always in the game but just fell short at the end, despite the best efforts of Mark Challis (31*) and Rob McAllister (19) near the end. Mark Burkitt (23), Andy Black (19), Simon Smithers (16) and David Franklin (12) also made double figures, and McAllister and Simon Baldwin took two wickets apiece.

Chevening's reply started badly losing 5 quick wickets effectively ending any hopes of a huge run chase. 06/06/09: Chevening (214-9) lost to Sissinghurst II (221-9) by 7 runs
A stunning fightback from Andy Black and Rob McAllister saw Chevening fall just short of Sissinghurst's total on Saturday. After winning the toss and fielding, there was ebb and flow throughout Sissinghurst's innings: opener Wicks scored 61, but four early wickets shifted the momentum Chevening's way. Paul Blake (3-44) and Rob McAllister (2-39) did the bulk of the damage. Some big hitting, though, towards the end from Sissinghurst's batsmen 8 and 9 propelled them to a total of 221-9. In reply, Chevening were in trouble after losing both openers for ducks, but Andy Black (92) and Rob McAllister (49) made sure the match went right down to the wire. In the end, though, Chevening finished seven runs short after an excellent game of cricket.

Chevening managed a hard-earned draw with Southern Railway & Kenley on Sunday. Will Fry opened the bowling for Chevening and took 2-28, but half-centuries from the SR&K numbers 1 and 3 propelled them towards a good total of 176-4. 23/05/09: Chevening (115) lost to Speldhurst (118-4) by 6 wickets

This was despite the best efforts of Paul Blake, who bowled an excellent spell of nine overs, four maidens, two wickets for just seven runs. Chevening's innings was something of a statistical curiosity: 0, 1 and 8 were the only digits to appear in the batsmen's totals (Rob Hadlow, Rob McAllister and Simon Baldwin all scored 18; there was a 10, four 1s and three 0s). Other than that though not much to write home about; Mr. Extras was by some way the top-scorer with 39.

Chevening only just came out second best in a low-scoring encounter with Brasted & Sundridge on Sunday. A day to forget for Chevening, who were comprehensively beaten in their match against BAFCC on Sunday. Chevening started promisingly, with only one of the top seven BAFCC batsmen getting past 6. However, their number 8 blasted a superb 109 to take the game away from us, despite some good bowling from Will Fry (3-20), James Denman (2-37) and Rob Hadlow (2-24). The less said about Chevening's innings, the better - 54 all out, with only Pete Rushbrook (16) making double figures.
