04/07/11: Apologies for the recent lack of updates, I've been swamped at work (it was much easier when I had a summer holiday!). Over the last three weeks we have beaten Sennocke but lost to Ash, Halstead, Knockholt and Otford; match reports coming soon.
14/06/11: Just a quick note to say that this year's fantasy competition has been cancelled due to lack of support. Any money paid to the club will of course be refunded; we hope to run the competition again next year.
12/06/11: Chevening v Wrotham cancelled due to rain.
11/06/11: Chevening (115) lost to Halstead (118-2) by 8 wickets [League: 1 point]
Chevening's league side were brought back down to earth after the elation of last week's win with a convincing loss at home to Halstead on Saturday. Batting first, Chevening could only muster up a disappointing 115, with debutants Mark Roberts (31) and Joshua Town (17) top-scoring. Alex Craven took 5-24 for the away side, before Phil Dent's 65 sealed the deal with the bat.
05/06/11: Chevening (115-2) vs North Downs abandoned due to rain
From the sublime to the ridiculous - after one of their best-ever games on Saturday came one of Chevening's worst-ever games on Sunday. Miserable weather dampened the day throughout, though there was time for an aggressive unbeaten half-century from the evergreen Roy Smithers, as well as 41* from James Denman. Eventually, with the fielding side unable to grip the ball, the game was abandoned.
04/06/11: Chevening (216-7) beat Sissinghust (214-6) by 2 runs [League: 20 points]
On a baking hot Saturday in June, Chevening emerged victorious after one of the best games of cricket in their 32-year history. Batting first, they made their way to 172-1, with David Franklin (85) putting together a good knock in partnership first with Mark Burkitt (34) and then in a century stand with Simon Baldwin (38). In true Chevening style, though, a collapse followed, as they proceeded to lose 6 wickets for just 12 runs and struggle to a score of 216-7; slightly above par overall, given the long boundaries all around the ground, but significantly lower than the 250 they had been targeting mid-way through the innings.
In reply, Chevening took wickets at regular intervals, with their bowling and fielding right on target, and the field positioning excellent throughout as plans were executed in clinical fashion. However, the wheels came off once the Sissinghust no.6 came in and started timing the ball to perfection, regularly clearing the ropes and swinging the match towards the home side with a quickfire 70. Crucially, he was caught by Franklin at long-on making good ground to his left, off the bowling of Simon Baldwin, who had returned to bowl accurately at the death. Sissinghurst, though, only needed 17 from 3 overs, and were still favourites. Will Fry and Simon Smithers produced the goods when it mattered, though, not conceding a single boundary from the last three overs, and Sissinghurst - needing 8 from the final over to win - could only manage 5 of them. Our first league win of the season and a crucial one for everyone involved in what was a fabulously enjoyable game of cricket.
29/05/11: Chevening (164) lost to Harvel II (205-7) by 41 runs
Chevening lost their game away at Harvel on Sunday, but it was a game they perhaps should have won, with all of their top six batsmen making starts but none going on. Harvel batted first and Chevening bowled well, with Jason Draper unlucky not to pick up a wicket for his nine overs of toil. Pat Sutton Mattocks bowled for the first time in three years and found both turn and control, deserving his 3-29 from 6 overs. James Denman also took two wickets. In reply, David Franklin (38) top-scored, with David Usher (31) also passing thirty, but twenties and thirties were not enough as Chevening eventually fell 41 runs short with three overs to spare.
28/05/11: Chevening (203-7) lost to Horsmonden (207-3) by 7 wickets
Chevening batted well against a strong Horsmonden team but didn't have the bowling to back it up with in their game on Saturday. David Franklin (63) and Pat Sutton-Mattocks (51) formed the mainstay of the Chevening innings, putting on a century partnership before a mini-collapse meant that Chevening would've been looking at a score below 200 without some late hitting from James Denman. In reply, the Horsmonden opener scored a good hundred but there wasn't much to write home about for Chevening's bowlers, with only Johnny Martin - who took another two wickets - managing to restrict their batsmen.
